Healing Our Inner Child Wounds

The patterns running your life were learned. They can be unlearned.

If you’re activated right now, start with Nervous System Regulation first.

The Truth

A wound is the habits and strategies you learned to survive. If you don’t bring it into awareness, it keeps driving your choices and calling it personality.

Healing begins the moment you become aware of your old strategies, its limitations, and the impact its had on your life. It’s changing what you do when the past gets triggered in the present.

Patterns

  • Defending yourself fast, even when nobody attacked you

  • Shutting down when things get emotional

  • People-pleasing, then resentment

  • Control, perfectionism, overwork

  • Avoiding intimacy, avoiding commitment, avoiding being seen

  • Shame loops and self-criticism

  • Anger as protection

  • Numbing through scrolling, porn, substances, work

Awareness turns reaction into choice. That’s where you take your life back.

What's Underneath

Safety

“I’m not safe unless I stay in control / stay invisible.”

Worth

“I have to earn love through performance.”

Belonging

“If I show the real me, I’ll be rejected.”

Power

“If I’m not on top, I’ll be hurt.”

1-minute Reflection Prompt:

Which one has been running you the longest?

The Standard

How a grown man handles it

  • I name the pattern without becoming the pattern.

  • I regulate before I speak when I’m heated.

  • I own impact and repair when I damage trust.

  • I choose one clean move instead of a familiar strategy.

  • I keep small promises to myself.

Practices

Pick the tier that matches your bandwidth. Consistency beats intensity.

Tier 1 - Immediate

2 – 3 minutes

Interrupt the loop fast.
  • Trigger-to-Choice: “What am I protecting right now?”

  • Body cue check: jaw, shoulders, breath, hands

  • One clean move: “What is the next right step I’m avoiding?”

Tier 2 - Daily

8 – 12 minutes

Build stability through reps.
  • Short guided sit: meet the younger part

  • 3-line root loop journal: trigger → strategy → cost

  • Replace strategy: “Next time I will ____ instead.”

Tier 3 - Weekly

20 – 30 minutes

Integrate and reinforce.
  • Pattern review: what showed up, what it cost

  • One repair: repair one moment of distance you contributed to

  • One standard: choose one standard for the next 7 days

Bridges that make this work real

Bridges turn a triggered moment into a clean next move.

If you’re activated: you don’t need insight first. You need steadiness.

If you created distance: your next move is repair, not explanation.

If you’re doing this alone: you need mirrors and standards, not isolation.
